Overview

The Railroad That Built a City

Although Kingsville is most widely known today as the home of the legendary King Ranch, the city owes its very existence to the railroad. The 1904 Train Depot Museum tells that founding story — and it's free to explore.

Born from a dream and a $6,500 loan from cattle baron Richard King, native New Yorker Uriah Lott and B.F. Yoakum incorporated the St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railroad (the StLB&M) in 1903. By 1904, 158.06 miles of track connected Kingsville to Corpus Christi and Brownsville, opening the region to commerce, families, and a future that would shape South Texas for generations. Cotton, cattle, hogs, and produce moved north; hopeful settlers moved in. Kingsville was on the map.

The Museum

The depot itself fell quiet as rail travel faded from American life — but it didn't stay that way. Beautifully restored in time for Kingsville's centennial, the museum opened its doors on July 4th, 2004, exactly 100 years after the city was chartered. Inside, you'll find:

  • Custom signs and railroad emblems from the StLB&M era
  • Dining car place settings that recall the golden age of passenger travel
  • Employee and promotional publications documenting the railroad's growth
  • Lanterns, tools, and artifacts used by the men who built and ran the line
  • An operational telegraph — a working piece of living history
  • Family stories of settlers who rode the rails to Kingsville and built ranching and farming legacies still carried on today
